Retired Paris policeman, fireman and meter patrolman James Chandler, 77, of Paris died Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, at his residence.

His wife, Carolyn Dublin Chandler, survives. They were married on Oct. 22, 1960.

His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Ridgeway Funeral Home.

Mike Waddey, pastor of Cottage Grove Baptist Church, and a nephew, Barry Chandler of Calvary Temple Church in Kansas City, Mo., will officiate. Burial will be in Walker Cemetery.

Active firemen will serve as pallbearers.

Honorary pallbearers will be other active and retired firemen and members of the men’s adult Sunday school class at Cottage Grove Baptist Church.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. today and after 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Born Jan. 2, 1936, in Trezevant, he was a son of the late James Curtis and Kate Dickson Chandler.

Chandler was a member of Cottage Grove Baptist Church and its men’s Sunday school class. He retired after 25 years with the City of Paris. As a firefighter, he rescued a 6-year-old girl from a burning home on Porter Street in Paris in April 1977. He served in the National Guard for seven years.

After retiring from the City of Paris, he was a van driver for the Northwest Tennessee Human Resources Agency. He later served as a security officer at the Paris Social Security office. He formerly worked at Midland Brake and was a lifetime member of the Paris Elks Lodge.

Besides his wife, he leaves two sons: Mark Chandler and Mike (Teresa) Chandler, both of Paris; three sisters: Jaquita Walker of Alton, Ill., and Janie (Jonah) McKenzie and Georgia Smyth, both of Paris; two grandchildren: Jacob and Lauren Chandler, both of Paris; and several nieces and nephews.

He also was preceded in death by a brother: Bobby Chandler.
